Lipella's formation emanated from research conducted with funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at academic medical centers as well as direct NIH funding to the company. Lipella's assets focus on drug delivery therapies for smooth muscle dysfunction.

Management Team

Michael Chancellor, MD
Dr. Chancellor is internationally recognized as the leader in urinary bladder treatment and research. Prior to joining Lipella, Dr. Chancellor was Professor of Urology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and co-founder of Cook Myosite, originator of the first approved U.S. human urologic stem cell clinical trial. Dr. Chancellor has been principal investigator of over 75 additional clinical trials including physician sponsored IND trials. He is the recipient of over 25 NIH grants, and author of more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. He is consultant and advisory board member to over a dozen companies including Pfizer, Merck, J&J, Lilly, AstraZeneca, Allergan, Astellas, P&G and Indevus. Dr. Chancellor received his MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and completed his residency and fellowship training at the University of Michigan and Columbia University.

Jonathan Kaufman, PhD
Prior to co-founding Lipella, Dr.Kaufman was Vice President and Chief Science Officer of LaunchCyte LLC, a biotechnology corporate incubator. At LaunchCyte, Dr. Kaufman was co-founder of Proteopure Inc. and Knopp Neuroscience Inc.; served as the founding President of Crystalplex Corp.; served on the Boards of Reaction Biology Corp., Crystalplex Corp., and Immunetrics Inc.; and served as Secretary of Reaction BiologyCorp. Prior to joining LaunchCyte, Dr. Kaufman served on the New Technology Committee in the Chemical Manufacturing Division of Merck & Co., and also served as a consultant to GlaxoSmithKline in the department of bioinformatics. Dr. Kaufman received his MBA in Finance from the Wharton School, and his PhD in Biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

John Park, J.D., LL.M.
Director Business Development

John Park has completed six major tech transfer/acquisition ($100 mil plus) deals and numerous minor tech transfer transactions for over twenty years. He was also a member of Tularik's Asia Representative Team for the Amgen/Tularik $1.3 billion acquisition deal in 2004. John has served as a corporate counsel for over ten pharmaceutical companies in Asia and graduated from Boston University and Columbia Law School.
